Global Awarness Club

Published: January 26, 2010 at 1:53 PM

The Global Awareness Club has raised $600 to help with refurbishing a playground in Balti, Moldova. This is one of Lakeland’s Sister Cities. We recently donated $150 to the Haiti relief efforts and are currently raising funds to help buy science teaching books for Cumberland High School in Portmore, Jamaica, another one of our Sister Cities. Two of our students, Meg Shaw and Ana Conner, went to the International Youth Conference in Belfast, Ireland this past summer as representatives from Lakeland Sister Cities and we are now looking for two or three possible delegates to attend this summer’s conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Some of our members are already planning on hosting Japanese exchange students that will be arriving in August as part of the Sister Cities exchange program with Imabari, Japan. Imabari is one of Lakeland’s oldest sister cities and this annual exchange has been going on for many years alternating between Japanese students coming here for two weeks and American students going to Imabari for two weeks. We will continue to sponsor cultural evenings at various ethnic restaurants throughout this school year.
